DBC Family,

Well, we’re about to hit the halfway mark on the summer calendar. Can you believe it? DISD and surrounding colleges kick off in about 7 weeks- so we’re officially on the stretch run of the summer season (that is, for those of you who live by the school calendar- such as I!).

With that in mind, we’re kicking off a seven-week series at The Well, dealing with the issue of “Discipleship.” (based off of Mark Bailey’s book, To Follow Him). We’re going to take these next several weeks and study seven core characteristics that Jesus said would mark a true follower of His. Hopefully by the end of this series we can ask ourselves “Am I this?” or “Are we, as a church, this?” -and maybe move ourselves a little bit closer in obedience towards being a fully devoted follower of Jesus. This will be a great series to bring along a friend who might be wrestling with what it means to truly follow Christ & live out the Christian faith.

This Sunday (June 6th) we’ll be looking at the first characteristic Jesus spoke of… A Supreme & Incomparable Love for Him. If you get some time this week, read over Matthew 10:34-37 & Luke 14:26. This text will need a lot of unpacking and explaining, but in the meantime, ask yourself, “Where does my love for Christ rank in comparison to other loves in my life right now? How Can I tell? What sets apart that love from all the other loves of my life? What makes my love for Him distinct?” Ask God to prepare your heart for this series- that all of us would become more and more conformed to the image of Jesus; and as a result, more obedient in our following of Him as a true disciple.
